Pekin Ducks start to hatch at Hythe Primary

We have been incredibly lucky to get 6 eggs from The Incredible Egg Company.

Our ducks are Pekin ducks, a breed that are known for being adorable, silly and sociable.

Early this morning, 2 ducks hatched. They had to be kept in the incubator for 6 hours because their feathers needed to dry. They also needed to maintain a certain temperature in order to survive. The incubator gives them that temperature. As soon as the time was up, we could move the ducks over to their little cage. They have been handled by LOTS of adults today. Soon, we will be encouraging the children to handle them and help with their care.

The Ducklings are safe to stay at school overnight. Their water is topped up and their feed is filled to the brim. They will be taken home at the weekend, to ensure they are safe, fed, happy and socialised.
